A man reads the names of the dead in the Natori community center following the Great Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011. Many people were never found. In all 15,894 deaths were reported with 6,152 injured, and 2,562 people missing across twenty prefectures. 228,863 people moved away from their homes to temporary housing permanent relocation. Although the tsunami was caused by seismic forces global sea level rise means that water is already further in ashore and there is more of it making the threat for future tsunamis to be even more damaging.
